Case study: Ontario’s IESO builds Canada’s largest residential virtual power plant in just six months

Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and EnergyHub partnered to implement a demand response program that rewards Ontarians with smart thermostats for making short-term temperature adjustments during heat-fueled peak load events. Within six months, the program enrolled more than 100,000 homes, making it Canada’s largest residential virtual power plant.

Since then, the Peak Perks™ program has grown substantially and can deliver load reduction of more than 150 MW during times of peak demand — enough to power a city of more than 200,000 residents. The program was made possible because of the close partnerships between IESO, EnergyHub, and thermostat OEM partners. Its scale and success was largely due to strategic marketing through multi-channel enrollment and retention campaigns.
