SoCalGas expansion

SoCalGas and EnergyHub expand demand response program to include more leading thermostat brands

New York, NY – Feb. 14, 2019 – EnergyHub client SoCalGas® is expanding its innovative “Smart Therm Program” to include more eligible thermostat brands, giving customers more options when purchasing a connected thermostat and improving the utility’s ability to reduce natural gas consumption when demand is high.

SoCalGas customers can now enroll eligible devices from more of the leading connected thermostat brands in the Smart Therm Program, including Nest, ecobee, Emerson, Lux, and Radio Thermostat. Customers who are new to the program receive a $50 incentive when they sign up and a $25 incentive at the end of each season for remaining in the program. The addition of new thermostat brands is a major step in SoCalGas’ efforts to expand the program to more customers in their service territory.

The expansion of eligible thermostat brands comes on the heels of SoCalGas announcing a significant surge in enrollment in early January. EnergyHub and SoCalGas managed to more than double enrollment in the program, bringing the total number of enrolled devices to more than 35,000.

“SoCalGas is pleased to partner with a company like EnergyHub to grow our program,” said Dan Rendler, Director of Customer Programs and Assistance for SoCalGas. “Every time we add a new thermostat manufacturer to the program it allows more of our customers to participate and save money on their energy costs.”

The Smart Therm Program is powered by EnergyHub’s Mercury distributed energy resource management system (DERMS), which SoCalGas uses to run critical aspects of the program, including validating eligible customers and processing enrollments, calling demand response events, and assessing impact.

In addition to providing the Mercury DERMS as the program’s enterprise software solution, EnergyHub’s Client Success team is working with SoCalGas and device partners to provide marketing and recruitment expertise, as well as day-to-day management of the program.

“SoCalGas has a proven history of providing world-class service, and this expansion is a great example of that because it gives customers more choices when choosing the connected thermostat that’s right for them,” said Seth Frader-Thompson, President and Co-founder of EnergyHub. “We’re excited to manage this expansion and continue working with SoCalGas to scale the program and help the utility conserve more natural gas.”

SoCalGas and EnergyHub have worked together on the Smart Therm Program for three years, enrolling tens of thousands of customers into the industry’s first natural gas winter demand response program.

EnergyHub’s Mercury DERMS is used by more than 40 utilities across the United States to manage demand response, energy efficiency, and distributed energy resource (DER) programs. Combining sophisticated analytics with the largest ecosystem of connected device and DER partners in the industry, EnergyHub’s Mercury DERMS is the industry-leading platform for helping utilities manage both customer- and utility-installed DERs.
